Scouting for Food

Each year we are excited to support the very worthwhile annual food collection called "Scouting for Food" to help provide for nutritional needs within our community. This important and very visible Scouting activity is part of the U-Can-Share Food Drive of the South Plains Food Bank and partners.

To request information or adjustments for your unit area assignments within the city and county, contact the Scouting for Food District Coordinator.

Reminder: Don't forget to report your unit's service hours for this and other community service projects on the Good Turn for America site to raise the visibility of your efforts! (See also this movie regarding food collection and Good Turn for America on the scouting.org site.) We appreciate everyone's help with this effort.

Scouting for Food 2009 General Information

Including food donation pickup area assignments for all Chaparral District Scouting units
  1. DOOR HANGERS – This year, per the neighborhood data that are presently available, everyone will receive their full allotment of hangers needed for their area.  The door hangers this year list the pick up times and date specifically.

  2. PICKING UP OF DOOR HANGERS – Hangers will be ready for pick up at the District Banquet on Thursday, December 3rd.  If the person picking up for your unit is not the Scouting for Food person, please be sure they communicate that they have picked them up.  For those who cannot pick up the hangers at the District Banquet, please email the Scouting for Food District Coordinator  or call 831-9132 so we can arrange a pick up time for you on Friday, December 4th.

  3. UNIT ASSIGNMENTS - Below is a list of all units, their assigned area, and their assigned drop off location.  A few changes were made this year and most all of those units were contacted. For those changed, it is highlighted in orange.  More than likely, if you were not contacted, then your unit's assignment is the same as last year.  If your unit is NOT listed below, please contact me directly and I will assign your unit an area.  We have several unassigned areas.  Here is a link to a map showing the assigned areas and drop off locations for all units. The map that shows each unit’s assigned area is also available at http://tinyurl.com/ydo9373. When you pick up your hangers, a letter of information and a map of your area will be included.

  4. DROP OFF LOCATIONS FOR DAY OF FOOD PICK UP- We will have 2 drop off locations this year.  Location B is Sutherlands at 50th & Memphis.  Location C is the main food bank location at United on 82nd & Frankford.  Some units drop off location has changed. These are highlighted in blue in the table below. Please be aware of your drop off location.

  5. PICK UP TIME FOR FOOD BAGS - Please plan on picking up between 9am - 11am and dropping off at your assigned drop off location by noon on Saturday, Dec. 12th.

  6. The biggest complaint that we continue to have each year is that neighbors put out food and it isn’t picked up.  SO PLEASE – be sure to go back and pick up food in the neighborhoods that you leave hangers.  As well, even if you do not leave a hanger, please try to drive the neighborhoods of your assigned areas to check for food.

Finally, last year we were able to collect 40,000 pounds of food and $1200 for the food bank.  Years before that, we collected close to 60,000 pounds of food each year.  This year the food bank has seen a 25% increase in the need for their services.   More of the people they are seeing are people who have lost their jobs.  They also provide a hot nutritious meal to over 750 kids each day through the Kids Cafe program.  So our efforts this year are very important.  Probably more so than years past.  As we begin this season, we are very confident that we will bring in the most food than we have in several years.  Thank you in advance for all your help in this endeavor that will help out our community so much.

Yours in Scouting,
Community Relations Team
Shelly Walraven, Lynette Moore, Frank Goode
